Good News
Stories – Mansour

At 22 years old, Mansour wanted to improve his English, prepare for university, and one day become an IT engineer and entrepreneur. In June, he joined MTC’s Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program to build his language skills and get ready for the IELTS test, which he needed to attain the required marks to get into university.

Learning English wasn’t easy. The IELTS test felt overwhelming at first, but Mansour didn’t give up.

With guidance from his trainers at MTC Belconnen, he switched to the Pearson Test of English (PTE) to fast-track his goal of studying at the University of Canberra. In his first mock test, he scored 50 out of 100, which was encouraging, but he needed 60 to qualify for his uni course.

Along the way, Mansour discovered more than just language skills. Through MTC’s Digital Literacy and Job Search programs, he learned how to adapt his CV for the Australian job market and was invited to an interview for the Work Experience and Support Program (WESP) Round 2 2025–26 run by Multicultural ACT in August 2025. He was offered a role that could have led to a permanent job with Access Canberra or Services Australia, but Mansour chose to stay focused on his studies and his dream of becoming an IT graduate.

Mansour is also a mentor to new students, a volunteer helping mature learners with reading and writing, and a key organiser for community events. From representing the Afghan community at MTC’s multicultural event to collaborating with MARS Australia Inc., Mansour has shown resilience, leadership, and a passion for helping others.
