Stories – Hoa

Despite over 10 years of experience as a chef, Hoa faced challenges securing long-term work after relocating to Sydney from Melbourne. Hoa had previously worked in a Vietnamese restaurant in Melbourne. After moving to Sydney, he was unable to find employment for more than two years, despite actively applying for roles.

The MTC FutureReady team at Marrickville recognised that Hoa needed support to rebuild confidence, strengthen his skills, and reconnect with employment opportunities. His Job Coach, Jonathan, recommended MTC’s Workforce Preparation Class. Coach Jonathan recognised that this class would provide the structure and support Hoa needed to re-engage and prepare for work. The team at Marrickville also supported him to improve his English, while developing essential computer and job search skills.

A key part of Hoa’s development was participating in a short course on interview skills. Through this, Hoa practised writing job applications, prepared for common interview questions, and took part in mock interviews. He also actively searched for real job opportunities, applying his new skills with growing confidence. In the final week of the program, Hoa to put his skills into practice. With a brokered placement arranged by the team, he attended a real interview and successfully secured full-time employment as a chef with UeatHome in Leichhardt.

The MTC team continued to support Hoa as he transitioned into employment. He is now earning a stable income and has already begun training to become a supervisor, demonstrating his strong potential for career progression. Hoa expressed his appreciation for the support he received from his trainer Phil.

“Phil helped me learn computer skills and taught me how to give answers in an interview. I made some good friends in this class and it helped me a lot, ” Hoa said.

Hoa has now achieved more than 12 weeks of employment and is thriving in his role.
