Story – Hanna

Hanna, a Syrian refugee, came to Australia seeking safety and a new life.

When he arrived, Hanna had no English and faced several barriers. He came to MTC FutureReady Redcliffe for support, where the team organised a translator for every appointment. This ensured Hanna could clearly explain his challenges and fully understand how the team could assist him.

During his intake, the Employment Consultant gained a better understanding of Hanna’s situation. His education had been disrupted, and he had only completed schooling to Year 9. He also struggled with basic maths and, overall, found it difficult to settle into life in Australia.

With ongoing support from his Employment Consultant, Hanna received tailored assistance through translated appointments and culturally appropriate guidance. He was supported step by step with job searching, understanding Australian workplace expectations, and building his confidence. He also joined the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) to improve his communication skills.

Through the Employment Fund, Hanna was able to access essential barber tools, helping him move towards work in an area he enjoys.

Hanna has now secured a job at an Arabic-owned barber shop, where his skills and cultural background are valued. He is now living safely in Australia with his extended family, working, gaining confidence, and building a positive future.
