Most jobs are not disappearing, but they may be changing with AI

It’s easy to feel uncertain about the future of work, especially with all the talk around artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. But the reality is more reassuring than it seems.

According to the Generative Artificial Intelligence Capacity Study from Jobs and Skills Australia, about 79 per cent of jobs in Australia are at low risk of automation. That means most roles will continue to exist, but they may look a little different.

Many industries like construction, hospitality, aged care and trades are expected to grow and remain largely unaffected by AI. These jobs require practical, hands-on experience and human interaction. If you work or want to work in one of these areas, your skills are still highly valued and in demand.

Other roles, such as administration, reception and data entry, may see more tasks being supported or streamlined by AI. But this doesn’t mean the work disappears. Instead, it highlights the importance of adapting and building digital confidence.

Digital literacy is not about becoming a tech expert. It’s about being comfortable with the tools that are now part of everyday work, like writing an email, navigating online forms, attending virtual interviews or using basic digital platforms, like Teams and Slack. Knowing how to work these platforms is a universal requirement across multiple industries and positions. These are skills that can be learned quickly and can make a big difference when applying for jobs or re-entering the workforce.

That’s where MTC FutureReady can help. Through our Workforce Australia services, we support people who are looking for work or thinking about their next step. We offer one-on-one coaching to help you update your CV or resume, identify your strengths and goals, and build the digital skills employers are looking for.

There’s no need to feel like you’re falling behind. Whether you’re returning to work after a break, changing industries, or just want to build your confidence, we’re here to support you.
