Recognition of prior learning and credit transfer

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a formal assessment process that determines the extent to which an individual’s existing skills, knowledge, and experience – gained through formal, non-formal, and informal learning – meet the requirements of a training product. This process is conducted with the same rigour as any other assessment and must comply with the principles of assessment and rules of evidence.

MTC FutureReady has an established procedure, ET SOP 009 – RPL & CT, which outlines the detailed steps involved in applying the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer processes.

For further details, or if you would like to apply for RPL, please contact MTC FutureReady on 1300 232 663.

Credit transfer

MTC FutureReady recognises and supports nationally recognised qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), in accordance with the 2025 Standards for RTOs.

What is Credit Transfer?

Credit Transfer allows students to receive credit for units of competency they have previously completed as part of an equivalent training product. This process ensures students do not need to repeat learning they have already achieved.

Key Requirements:

Students applying for Credit Transfer must provide authentic AQF certification documentation (Certificate or Statement of Attainment) or an authenticated VET transcript (unless prevented by licensing or regulatory requirements or the training product).

We will verify the authenticity of all documents by:

  • Checking the issuing RTO’s registration and scope on the National Register.
  • Using the USI transcript service or contacting the issuing RTO directly if required.

If authenticity cannot be confirmed, Credit Transfer will not be granted until verification is complete.

Equivalence

Credit Transfer will only be granted where the unit of competency is deemed equivalent under the training package rules. If a unit is not equivalent, we will provide alternative pathways such as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or gap training.

For more information, or to apply for a Credit Transfer, please contact MTC FutureReady on 1300 232 663.
