Peter’s story
Overwhelmed by new technology, Peter turned to MTC’s Workforce Australia team for support to build confidence and adapt to unfamiliar systems.
Peter, a mature aged participant with many years of experience in the corporate world, joined MTC Maroubra in early 2025. He had worked as a club manager at East Cricket Club and as the head of markets at ANZ Bank. However, he faced personal challenges and struggled with digital skills, resume writing, and job applications.
With retirement approaching, Peter wanted a change but found it hard to adjust to new systems, feeling lost and overwhelmed by unfamiliar processes and technology.
Once he started at MTC’s Maroubra site, Health & Wellbeing Coach Sally took the time to understand Peter’s work experience and barriers and set in place a plan to refer him to MTC’s Employable Skills Training.
The guidance and instruction offered through Employability Skills Training helped Peter build confidence and adapt to new technologies and systems used in workplaces. Trainer Rosie saw Peter’s potential and eagerness to learn, giving him the personalised guidance he needed. By the end of the course, Peter had a polished resume, a strong cover letter, and had applied for his dream job with a rugby club, even talking to the hiring manager. His motivation and confidence grew, and he felt much happier and clearer about his goals. His dedication to attending his class was evident when he arrived at MTC soaked from the rain one day, and the MTC team assisted him with dry clothes so he could continue learning without interruption.
Peter’s successful completion of the course was celebrated with a basket of treats. He told his Coach Sally that the course focused on understanding what employers are looking for. He learned how to tailor his resume and cover letter to job specifications, realising the difference between a CV and a resume. Peter also gained a better understanding of interview questions and felt better prepared for future interviews.
“My Coach Sally has been very welcoming, and the EST Trainer Rosie was excellent, very patient, and very knowledgeable,” Peter said.
Peter’s determination and willingness to learn stood out. He diligently attended every session, stayed fully involved, and asked many questions, which helped him gain confidence in navigating a modern workplace.
