Stories – Vince
After 28 years in manufacturing, Vince came to MTC FutureReady Miller looking for support to find a new role where he could continue using his skills and experience.
When Vince came to MTC’s Miller site, he was determined to continue working. Having spent 28 years with his previous employer as a Powder Coater/Labourer, he had developed extensive practical skills and workplace experience. With the support of his Employment Practitioner, Josie, the focus was on finding an opportunity where those skills could be transferred and valued.
The MTC team worked closely with Vince to understand his experience, strengths and employment goals, while helping him recognise that the skills he had developed throughout his career remained highly relevant in a different work environment. This approach enabled MTC to support Vince into a role that aligned with both his capabilities and what he was looking for in his next stage of employment.
That support led to an opportunity with The Quail Company, where Vince initially started as a General Hand. From the beginning, he demonstrated reliability, initiative and a willingness to contribute wherever needed. His strong work ethic and positive attitude quickly became evident, and over time, he progressed into a Supervisor role.
For MTC, the support did not stop once Vince secured employment. The MTC team continued to work with Vince to help him keep his employment, navigate any barriers and build on his existing capabilities. By recognising the value of his experience and supporting his continued development, MTC helped create the foundations for a long-term employment outcome.
The right workplace environment has also been an important part of Vince’s success. He speaks warmly about The Quail Company and the people he works with. The move from a busy manufacturing environment to a farm has also provided a positive change of pace. After years of working around loud machinery and demanding manual labour, Vince now enjoys a quieter workplace, a smaller team and the farm environment. It is an environment he feels suits him well at this stage of his life.
At 66, Vince has achieved an outstanding milestone: 52 weeks of employment with The Quail Company.
Vince’s success is a reflection of his determination, but it also shows the value of looking beyond a person’s immediate job search. By taking the time to understand Vince’s experience, identify transferable skills, address barriers and connect him with a suitable employer, MTC helped turn decades of experience into a new employment opportunity.
The Quail Company has also strengthened its relationship with MTC FutureReady and has since provided employment opportunities for five additional MTC participants.
