Meet MTC – Trish
As advocates for inclusive hiring practices, at MTC we pride ourselves on practicing what we preach. Our workforce consists of almost 500 people from diverse backgrounds. Many of them have experienced the same challenges our clients might face.
By supporting over 20,000 people in overcoming barriers to meaningful work, we strive to provide the best support to our clients and employers. We are able to do so because of our people.
Trish is the CX Service Design Manager in the Strategic Growth team. She joined MTC in 2023 as Customer Experience and Service Design Lead and after 6 months moved into her current role. In her spare time, Trish likes to teach mindfulness and meditation.
Can you tell us a bit about your MTC journey?
I have been with MTC for two years and in that time, I have been able to experience moving up. Definitely timing had a part to play but I really appreciated the opportunity to put my hand up.
That happened within the first six months of joining and I am grateful that my abilities were recognised and I could move into the management role so soon. I was also really supported during that time and was able to make a smooth transition into my current role.
How do you maintain a good work–life balance?
I feel like I have been able to juggle work and my life outside of work well.
In regards to career development, I’ve been able to make meaningful changes and attend training and events that have helped me become better at my role. In life outside of work, I have been able to manage my studies and regular life admin things. I don’t have kids, but I am an army wife so sometimes I have to pick up a little bit more at home. My husband and I have a system that works now, and we both pick up where we can.
Thankfully with work, I have been able to negotiate a 4-day work week to allow myself that extra time to study or manage household duties.
What would you say to your 21-year-old self?
I would tell myself to listen to my instincts, despite being so young and so inexperienced.
At 21, I was working full-time and studying part-time. On paper, I was doing everything “right” – I was still in uni and I was already in the graduate program of a global advertising agency. I felt I had no good reason to have doubts about the path I was on, however, my work wasn’t making me feel fulfilled. It took me another few years to make a move towards a different, more fulfilling direction. In those years, I constantly battled the feeling of being out of place.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
Growing up, both my parents gave me 2 pieces of incredibly valuable advice in the form of their actions rather than words.
My dad has always been inspired by one clear mission and has worn many different hats as part of achieving it. Through his work as an academic, rehabilitation counsellor, dance therapist and volunteer, my dad gave me the advice: “Don’t be afraid to re-invent yourself.”
My mum’s career has been a bit less varied but she has had countless hobbies over the years. Through her hobbies, my mum gave me the advice: “Knowledge and experiences are more valuable than objects.”
